EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings have entered a new era with a new general manager and new head coach.
But there won’t be a change at the quarterback position.
The Vikings confirmed Sunday that they have agreed in principle to a one-year contract extension with Kirk Cousins that will tie the quarterback to the Vikings through at least the 2023 season.
“Kirk was one of the first players I called when I joined the Vikings, and it was immediately clear how much he cares about this organization and about winning” said General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Menshah. “High-level quarterback play is a prerequisite to building a championship team, and we are confident Kirk will continue along that path.”
Cousins, who had the 2022 season remaining on his current contract, was set to count for $45 million against the salary cap this upcoming season. The league announced last week that the 2022 cap will be $208.8 million.
Cousins’ agent Mike McCartney tweeted about the deal on Sunday evening.
